TACLOBAN CITY - A newly freed person deprived of liberty was shot dead on the day of his release from the Calbayog City District Jail, Wednesday (Feb. 23).

The victim was identified as Ruben Espelembergo, 34, based on the release paper that was retrieved from his belongings.
Initial information disclosed that the victim was walking along Brgy. Carmen when an unidentified assailant shot him on the head causing his instant death.
Espelembergo had just completed his sentence for attempted homicide.
His release paper showed that he was committed at the Calbayog City District Jail on Jan. 6, 2021.
The Calbayog CPS immediately ordered the establishment of checkpoints to track down the suspect.
Authorities are investigating the motive for the killing.
