Fluid core comes to fine jewelry through pearls

Blurring the lines with these lustrous gems

When we talk about pearls, ideas such as timeless charm and understated elegance come to mind. Think of the late great fashion designer Gabrielle Coco Chanel with strands of pearls cascading from her neck matched with a little back dress. There’s also Johannes Vermeer’s masterpiece “Girl with a Pearl Earring” and the Elizabethan era with its voluminous dressing adorned with pearls. This gem of the sea, for years, has become an ultimate piece for women. But with the rise of the fluid core movement in fashion today, an aesthetic blurring the gender boundaries and stereotypes when it comes to style, it seems like the pearl is becoming for everyone.

Men, cisgender or non-binary, have been reimagining fine jewelry with pearls and incorporating them in their ensembles. We’ve seen it in the past years—from Harry Styles to ASAP Rocky and BTS—and it looks like it is here to stay. And brands have been following suit, making it a modern classic.

The latest to showcase its take on fluid core pearl jewelry pieces is Arao. With the pearl being the National Gem of the Philippines, the Hong Kong-based brand introduces to Filipinos its designs that cater to a variety of gender.

Its “Sikat” and “Sinag” necklaces explore future-forward ways of wearing strings of pearls. Baroque Keishi pearls, prized for their unparalleled luster, were the choice gem for these fluid core styles. Strung as a solitary gem or together with a colored gemstone at the center, these contemporary keepsakes were crafted to allow the uniqueness of every individual from the entire gender spectrum to shine through.

“This biggest trend celebrates contemporary and everyday wearables that offer a jolt of fresh personality,” Mirabel Rosar, the founder and CEO explains. “Arao embraces this blending of the masculine and the feminine because it means inclusion, unification, and independent thinking.”
