Tanghalang Pilipino to restage 'Doc Resureccion: Gagamutin Ang Bayan'

A tale about poverty and politics is set to come alive again on stage as Tanghalang Pilipino Actors Company plans to restage Layeta Bucoy’s “Doc Resurreccion, Gagamutin ang Bayan.” If COVID restrictions ease further, there may even be a chance for a live staging of the show at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

As the Philippines enters another election campaign period, showcasing this Palanca Award-winning piece is relevant if not necessary for Filipinos today. Its story revolves around young doctor Jess Resureccion and his cousin Boy Pogi Resurreccion, both running as provincial mayor, with the latter considered a nuisance candidate.

The play first hit the stage in 2009 as part of that year’s Virgin Labfest, an annual theater laboratory festival featuring new scripts written by Filipino playwrights at the CCP. In 2012, the play was staged by Tanghalang Pilipino as part of their “Eyeball” production.

According to Theater Fans Manila, the 2022 run of the play will be directed by Dennis Marasigan with Tanghalang Pilipino’s Marco Viaña and Jonathan Tadiaoan leading the cast.
