DOST stresses importance of farmers, fisherfolk, scientists in ensuring food security

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) recognized the contribution of farmers, fisherfolks, and scientists in ensuring a stable supply of quality food for Filipino consumers and entrepreneurs.

"Malaki ang papel ng syensa sa pagsisigurado na mayroon tayong pagkain sa ating hapag kainan (Science plays a big role in making sure we have food on our dining tables)," DOST Undersecretary for Research and Development Rowena Cristina Guevara said during the launching of Flavors of Science Campaign.

"Tinutulungan ng ating mga siyentista at mga mananaliksik ang ating mga magsasaka at mangingisda upang mapataas ang kanilang ani, pati na rin ang kanilang kita (Our scientists and researchers are helping our fishermen to increase their yield, as well as their income)," Guevara added.

The Flavors of Science campaign is an initiative of the DOST-Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD) that aims to communicate to the public the value of farmers and fisherfolk's contribution and hard work in ensuring quality produce.

It also aims to provide an opportunity for Filipinos to appreciate the science behind the farm and fish products that they consume.

DOST-PCAARD has collaborated with celebrity chef and restaurant owner Marvin Agustin to be its agri-aqua ambassador.

Agustin will showcase food recipes out of agriculture and aquatic produce from DOST-PCAARD's research and development and will feature the people behind the innovations and the places where these developments are happening.

According to DOST-PCAARD, through his extensive social media exposure, Agustin will help inform more people about the science behind Filipino food, especially those that involve local research and development initiatives.
