Singer, songwriter and actress Karylle Yuzon always believed in the strength of women and how a united voice can influence change - in this case ensure the security of Philippine troops and the plight of fishermen in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Thus, Karylle, in collaboration with Sponge Cola surprised her fans with the release of her latest music video - Bayaning Mangigisda - Kababaihan which aims to show the reality of those relying on the West Philippine Sea for their livelihood.

"I just want people to see all the fisherfolk and where they live. When you see their faces, the actual small bangkas, then you can imagine their lives better. They are real people who face real dangers in their daily lives," Karylle said.

It is no secret the Filipino fishermen are sometimes turned away in the WPS, going home empty-handed to their families, which shows that the ongoing dispute is a threat to the country's food security.

The Philippine Coast Guard also ply the WPS, putting their lives on the line against threats to protect ordinary fisherfolk and ensure our sovereign rights are upheld and protected.

"Through music, we can help bring light to their issues because I personally believe that we can all help each other if we make some changes here and there, like buying local produce,” Karylle said.

For Karylle, music knows no boundaries, and they hope the video will get the message across. "Music speaks to the heart," she said.

The video features PCG troops PO2 Noelle Cristina Penetrante, the first Filipina to summit and traverse Mt. Everest, LT Carina Dayondon, the first and only Filipina to complete the Seven Summits of the World and PO3 Mary Neth Bechayda, a 3-time Dragon Boat World Champion.

The three accomplished women are the flag bearers in the video, which also showed women manning the fishing boats that surround a Coast Guard vessel in a show of support.

It also featured Karylle's husband, vocalist Yael Yuzon of Sponge Cola.

Karylle shares that the video awakened the Filipino spirit in people she came across in social media, and because of this she felt they have accomplished what they sought to achieve.

"It is always good to awaken something in fellow Filipinos that inspire you as a Filipino," said Karylle.

She said the video wants to show those involved in the West Philippine Sea issue that the Filipino people are rallying behind them.

"We have to show that we care. And that shows that the fisherfolk who have lived in those shores are not alone," she said, when asked how ordinary citizens can help in the issue of the WPS.

Collaborating with her husband Yael for the Music Video project made it more special. "We collaborated on this song, he made a guitar track and I sang over it with lyrics I wrote," she said.

The lyrics speaks about the strength of women - Kababaihan tinig ay nadarama, Tibay mo’y kakaiba, Lakas at dalisay.”

Also included in the video is Karylle's classmate and close friend Noelle Wenceslao who was part of the expeditions to Mount Everest and the Philippine Balangay Expedition.

"She is the first to really show me that Kaya ng Pinay” and I have been so fascinated in strong women ever since. They are just so inspiring," Karylle said.

The video was done in partnership with the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement, a non-government organization whose primary goals includes sustainable agriculture.

"The idea to combine world-class athletes and the Filipina Fisherwomen is a new idea, but it fits. This video is about the triumph of the Filipina Spirit in the face of extreme adversity," Karylle said.

She said the video wants to ignite the Filipinos love for the country and our countrymen and to remember to patronize our own products. "It’s also a little reminder to buy local. It's important to know where we get our food. Not only will we be supporting our Filipino fishermen and farmers, we will also be helping the environment by lowering our carbon footprint," Karylle said.

She stressed the importance of supporting local farmers such as those in Benguet and elsewhere, who constantly face hardships just to survive.

"The goal is to help them not become marginalized and through my music, empower them to dream bigger and build better lives," Karylle said.

She wants to understand the plight of farmers, especially now that her mother Zsa Zsa Padilla has her own farm. Karylle wans to extend help in her own small way.

"My mama recently started a small farm in Quezon. It is a joy to watch her, both a singer and a newbie farmer. One of my favorite messages from her is when she said she had to go to the farm to mix fertilizer. Never in my life did I think that she would message me something like that. She has also been sharing with us the fruits of her labor - bigas, kamote and other veggies," Karylle narrates.

She said unity is important if we want to achieve our goals and urged the youth to do what is right for the country.

"We can be heroes to one another. Continue to serve our country and to love one another unconditionally," said Karylle.

The video can be viewed in Karylle's Instragram, YouTube and TikTok page (#bayaning mangingisda, #ILoveWPS, #FoodSecurityisNationalSecurity) and has been shares thousands of times since it was released.
