What you need to know about the costumes in 'Inventing Anna'

One of the show's top looks? The hotel robe

In 2019, the courtroom became a fashion arena as Anna Delvey, Anna Sorokin in real life, posed as a German heiress and scammed many from New York’s upper society. That story is now being depicted onscreen through Shonda Rhimes’ latest series “Inventing Anna.” The nine-episode show documents the life of the con artist, from her jet-setting lifestyle and establishing her foundation to being arrested in Los Angeles and, ultimately, spending time behind bars.

But if there is another thing the “Soho Grifter” is also guilty of, it’s her great sense of style. Thanks to costume designers Lyn Paolo and Laura Frecon, Anna, while clad in the most luxurious pieces, is the newest fashion muse to emerge from our streaming time.

Now, if you’re like us who are obsessed with the fashions presented on the show, here are some behind-the-scene stories you should know about dressing this one chic fraudster.

The show has millions of dollars for costume

With the real Anna sporting a lot of designer pieces, the show became a fashion fest of high-end labels ranging from Alexander McQueen and Balenciaga to Chanel, Gucci, among others. Borrowing luxury items for the series isn’t ideal as production may cause damage to the pieces. In a report by Financial Times, Frecon shared that they “had a great budget in the millions of dollars for costumes.” Some of the purchased pieces are now archived by Netflix while others are sold on the luxury resale platform The RealReal.

Her style reflects her character arc

Fashion plays beyond just eye candy for viewers. In “Inventing Anna,” her looks mirror the highs and lows of her life from 2013 to 2017. Described by the costume designers as a “chameleon,” Anna shifted her style depending on where she is in her life. She became a copy of Grace Kelly with her superb resort ensembles, an elegant muse as she joins New York’s “ladies who lunch,” and a woman in charge with everything sleek and sophisticated.

Elevating her personal fashion

Paolo and Frecon tried to remain faithful to Anna’s dressing attitude. But for the show, they also upped the style ante when it comes to their curated looks for the character. “Our Anna needed to look a little more elevated than the real Anna,” Paolo told Time magazine.

One of the top favorite looks: The hotel robe

Paolo also shared with Time magazine her favorite look in the show, which is, quite shockingly, the hotel robe during her tragic trip in Morroco saying, “The hotel owns her, and they’re not going to let her leave.”

Anna Delvey Court Looks page is still up on Instagram

Instagram played a huge part in making the titular character’s costumes. And for her trial looks, Paolo and Frecon kept them as close as they can to what she wore during that period. If you want to check it out, @annadelveycourtlooks on Instagram is still up.
