Elderly woman dies, child injured in Makati City fire

An elderly woman died while a child was injured in a fire that hit a commercial building at Kalayaan Avenue in Barangay Guadalupe Nuevo, Makati City on Sunday morning, Feb. 20.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) identified the fatality as Mely Mencias, 76, and the injured individual as Sarah Kingking, 10.

According to the BFP, the fire was raised to first alarm at 4:13 a.m. and reached the second alarm at 4:39 a.m.

The fire was put under control at 5:48 a.m. and was declared fire out at 6:03 a.m.

Senior Fire Officer (SFO3) Jaime M Macababayao, the arson investigator on the scene, said the fire originated from the chapel on the third floor of the building owned by a Mr. Chui.

Mencias was trapped on the third floor, while Kingking was rescued by the firefighters.

Only the establishment of Mr. Chui was burned and the Kingking family was solely affected by the fire.

Further investigation is ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.

The fire incident resulted in damages worth P4 million, according to the BFP.
