IT'S THE SMALL THINGS
The wonders of how much a two year (and counting) pandemic has changed not only the lives of many, but most especially the perspective with which a lot of us now choose to live, and see life through is astounding.
Truly, among many other things, we have learned to appreciate the small everyday things we used to find so mundane, and take for granted. Last Monday was Valentine’s Day. A day dubbed, and seen by so many as a commercial holiday, when flower and chocolates prices surge; when extra cheesy social media posts are acceptable, and another excuse for many couples to go on a date.
If you were to ask me, Valentine’s Day has indeed been commercialized in the romantic aspect of love, indeed, love is a multi-faceted concept, indescribable emotion, and one we are not able to truly define. Its meaning evolves for each of us individually through the years, and depending as well on what we may be going through, or where in life we may find ourselves in.
I personally have always enjoyed Valentine’s Day. To me, it has always been a day of love. Christmas in February if you will, where I find it to be the perfect excuse to remind my nearest and dearest of how much they mean to me, and how much value they add to my life.
This year, surprisingly, I felt the love a thousand fold more from friends who are family. What was even more touching to me is the fact that they went the extra mile to make sure I felt loved, and remembered on the other side of the world. My social media feed was filled with photos, reminders, memes, and cartoons celebrating not only romantic love, but love among friends, family, and even in the workplace. Post pandemic, Valentine’s Day, and what it means to so many of us has evolved as well – and in the best way, if you ask me.
To be honest, I was not expecting anything from anyone at all this Valentine’s Day. As I said earlier, we have always dubbed it to be the quintessential Hallmark holiday where being cheesy, and eating extra sweets are a valid excuse for 24 hours. But I have personally enjoyed giving tiny tokens to special ones, and sharing the love on this day, through the years. Why not spread some extra kindness and remind someone how loved they are? I personally find so much joy in giving to those I love. There is indeed no feeling greater than knowing you have genuinely made someone smile.
This pandemic has taught us a lot of things, but most of all, it has reinforced the importance of letting those who mean the world to you know that they do. So though the 14th of February every year may have a label, every day of the year is just as good enough a day to let your loved ones know how much of your heart they take up, how much you are grateful for, and appreciate them.
