Aboitiz-owned DUs migrate to cloud computing

The distribution utilities (DUs) owned by Aboitiz Power Corporation will be migrating to cloud computing solutions for the build-up of their information technology (IT) infrastructure as a way to further improve their services to customers.

The IT platform of their DUs will be moving away from on-premise servers to the Amazon Web Services (AWS), which is an on-demand cloud computing enterprise of tech giant Amazon and has been catering to the needs of corporates, government institutions and even metered pay-as-you-go-basis of IT solutions.

“This innovation provided the company with increased system reliability and scalability, reduced operating costs and better customer service,” Aboitiz Power said.

As of mid-February this year, the cloud migration of the Aboitiz Power distribution utilities already reached 91-percent; and the last two to have carried out the shift had been its Balamban and Lima Enerzones in Cebu and Batangas.

The three main companies in the power distribution segment of its business are the Visayan Electric Company, Davao Light and Power Company; and Cotabato Light & Power Company. Altogether, these firms serve more than 1.0 million customers across power grids.

According to Lemuel Quilos, vice president for IT of Aboitiz Power, “there is now a greater need to ensure that AboitizPower is equipped to respond quickly and efficiently to our customer's needs,” and that shall be underpinned by higher leaning of its businesses on to IT platforms or cloud computing solutions.

In particular, he cited that “fully migrated and optimized systems will reduce the processing time for most vital back-end processes like bill extraction and payment posting by up to 50%,” and as a result, such “leads to the prompt servicing of customers and further streamlining of the MobileAP,” which is the mobile app launched by Aboitiz Power in 2020.

Through that mobile app, the customers of Aboitiz Power can “check current and previous bills, see power consumption charts, and manage multiple accounts.”

The Aboitiz firm emphasized that “this digitalization initiative improved each distribution utility's performance in batch processing, extraction and generation of operational and analytical reports, and resiliency during unplanned system outages.”

Anton Mari G. Perdices, chief operating officer of Aboitiz Power Distribution Group, said their company “embraces innovation as a key enabler to the growth and success of our businesses,” adding that “we are constantly on the lookout for ways to maximize the latest technologies and digital trends to enhance our operations and customer service.”

Aboitiz Power similarly indicated that its enterprise systems – including asset management, geographic information system (GIS) or mapping and other legacy systems will also be moving to the cloud platform – and this is targeted by April this year.
