Robredo mourns death of Filipino master weaver Ambalang Ausalin

Vice President Leni Robredo has expressed her sympathy to the family of Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee Ambalang Ausalin who passed away on Friday, Feb. 18.

"Mourning the loss of Ambalang Ausalin, who fought to preserve the tradition of Yakan weaving," Robredo said in a statement on Friday.

The death of Ausalin, a national treasure in Yakan weaving, was confirmed by Lamitan City Mayor Rose Furigay and a tribute by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

She was 78.

Robredo also conveyed her sympathy to the weaving community and her support to them in preserving their tradition.

"Patuloy tayong nakikiisa sa ating Yakan weavers sa pagsiguro na mananatiling buhay ang kanilang tradisyon, para sa pangarap na mas magandang bukas (We will continue to be one with the Yakan weavers in ensuring that their tradition will remain alive for a dream of a more beautiful tomorrow)," the Vice President said.

Ausalin is an esteemed textile weaver in Lamitan City, Basilan. She was known for her master skills in making Yakan tapestry, particularly in crafting the most complex design like the suwah bekkat (cross-stitch-like embellishment) and suwah pendan (embroidery-like embellishment) techniques of the bunga sama category.
