The Philippine Olympic Committee is eyeing to recruit more talents that could possibly qualify and represent the country in the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milano and Cortina in Italy.
Through the help of Philippine Ski and Snowboard Federation and Philippine Skating Union, the POC is hoping to find prospects – both homegrown and overseas – who could possibly don the country’s colors in other medal events in the quadrennial meet.
“It’s time to look for other talents not only in alpine skiing but also in other events like figure skating, bobsleigh, curling, snowboard and freestyle and cross-country skiing. I believe that there’re a lot of talents abroad with Filipino blood who can represent the country,” said POC President Rep. Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino.
Asa Miller has been the country’s lone representative in the past two Winter Games – first in the Pyeongchang in 2018 and in this year’s edition in Beijing. The two-time Winter Olympian, however, had a forgettable stint this year as he failed to finish in his Slalom and Giant Slalom events.
Despite Miller’s disappointing run, Tolentino said that his qualification alone in two events is already worthy of attention.
“Representing us in the Winter Olympics twice is absolutely big for us as a tropical nation,” he said. “We’re still proud of Asa.”
Moving forward, though, Tolentino hopes to see more Filipinos competing in other Winter games events.
“We will explore the Winter Games sports and we will try to find more Filipino talents. I believe there are disciplines that we can excel in," Tolentino stressed.
Possible national team members include 19-year-old alpine skier Brandon Leitner, 21-year-old freestyle mogul skier Melvin Kangas, 24-year-old snowboard athlete Adrian Lee Tongko and 19-year-old skier Ana Noelle Wahleithner.
In skating, there's 18-year-old short track speed skater Julian Macaraeg and 16-year-old figure skater Sofia Frank.
