Parish starts collecting old palm fronds for Ash Wednesday

A parish in Manila has started collecting old palm fronds for the Ash Wednesday observance next month.

The Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Singalong, Manila on Friday, Feb. 18, announced that parishioners may start bringing their old palm fronds to the parish.

"It will be burned and will be used during Ash Wednesday on March 2," the parish said in a Facebook post.

"Please give your palm fronds to the parish guard or staff," it added.

Filipino Catholics usually keep the palm fronds they bought during the observance of Palm Sunday in their homes either in the altar, door or windows.

Catholics observe the start of the Lenten season on Ash Wednesday.

Lent is also a time when Catholics are enjoined to do good works, fast and pray.

During Ash Wednesday, the faithful have their foreheads marked with ashes (from the burnt palm fronds) as a sign of penance.
