Pacquiao to distribute excess campaign donations to the poor

CAINTA, Rizal--Presidential candidate Senator Manny Pacquiao says that he will distribute to the poor any excess campaign donations he will receive from donors.

Despite retiring from the boxing ring, Senator Manny Pacquiao remains popular among adoring Fiipino fans. He was mobbed by supporters during a motorcade in Rizal towns of Taytay, Cainta, Angono and Binangonan.

The PROMDI party standard made this vow even as he warned that loan sharks, whether foreigner or local lenders, will face jail time and deportation if they will continue to exploit the poor and small time traders who are in dire straits and are forced to borrow money at highly usurious interest rates.

“Hindi naman ganoon kalaki ang nagagastos ko at wala naman ako balak bawiin ito sa gobyerno (What I have spent is not that much and I don’t intend to get it back from the government),“ Pacquiao told a press conference here on Friday, Feb. 18.

The Mindanaoan lawmaker said that while he has spent his personal money to finance his presidential campaign, the amount taken from his own money is not that much because he also receives donations from supporters.

Asked if what he will do with unspent and excess campaign donations, Pacquiao gave a quick answer: “Ibibigay ko (ang pera) at itutulong ko sa mga tao (I will give the moneyto help the people).”

Disposing of excess campaign donations sparked a controversy when Akyon Demokratiko presidential bet and Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso admitted that he deposited excess campaign funds to his personal bank account.

Pacquiao is running under an anti-poverty platform. One of the richest members of Philippine Senate, the Filipino boxing icon is also known for his philathropic work.

In the same media interview, Pacquiao said he will go after usurers who are taking advantage of the poor by offering them loans at unfair payment schemes.

“Ang 5-6 hindi iyan makatarungan (The 5-6 scheme is unfair),” Pacquiao told journalists.

The Mindanaoan lawmaker who is seeking the presidency under “prioritize the poor” program of governance, said that if elected president, he will initiate a lending program for the poor that is “interest free”.

“Kailangan sa aking leadership, pauutangin natin sila at kapag lumago ang negosyo nila ibabalik din nila ang puhunan sa gobyerno (Under my leadership, I will lend money and as soon as they are able to recoup capital, they will return the borrowing to the government),” he explained.

Asked how he would deal with alien loan sharks, Pacquiao stated: “Ipadedeport ko ang mga loan sharks. Kung ilegal ang ginagawa nila, bakit hindi natin sila paaalisin? (I will deport the loan sharks. If they're doing something illegal, why won't we kick them out?)"

Informed that some borrowers do not pay back their loans from government which they consider as dole outs, Pacquiao maintained that he believes the poor will not consider the loans as dole outs and that they should be trused based on word of honor.
