Former Defense Secretary and senatorial candidate Gilbert “GIbo” Teodoro wants to promote the “buy local” campaign as a means to support micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) should he be elected into senate in the upcoming 2022 elections.

“We should advocate among consumers the economic benefits of buying local brands. If we support our local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), they will flourish and expand, they will create more livelihood opportunities and jobs for Filipinos,” Teodoro said in a press statement on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
He further explained that one issue with local products to be addressed is how Filipinos sometimes prefer imported brands as they are cheaper than local products,.
“We need to make Filipino products competitive in its own domestic market. It can be done when the government boosts its funding for programs that will enhance the capacity building of our MSMEs,” he said.
“To help them improve their quality and create economy of scale so that they can produce and sell at lower prices. Quality products and competitive prices - that’s the Philippine product,” Teodoro added.
Teodoro, who ran and lost in the 2010 presidential elections, is ending his 10-year political hiatus by running for senatorial seat under the People’s Reform Party (PRP) in the 2022 elections.
