Eugene Layug drops anti-Valentine track 'Maghihiwalay Din Kayo'

Novelty singer-songwriter Eugene Layug released his "anti-Valentine" track, "Maghihiwalay Din Kayo" on Monday, Feb. 14.

Published under O/C Records, the track's release is impeccably timed for Valentine's Day and is accompanied by a visualizer releasing on the same day. Maghihiwalay Din Kayo is the ultimate soundtrack for this Valentine's Day — exploring a ‘bitter’ sentiment towards romantic narratives.

“Wala pa ako napapansin na kanta na sobrang bitter kaya ayun happy to be the representative of “sugo ng mga bitter," says Eugene.

Inspired by the catchphrase “maghihiwalay din kayo” upon seeing a couple around the metro on his ride back home from a gig back in 2017, Eugene's wit as a songwriter illuminated to which developed the curation of the single.

“Ever since pine-perform ko yung MDK nakikita ko na sumasayaw yung mga tao kahit yung iba ‘di marunong parang ako. I just want the song to feel good," he shares.

While the track presents a mix of OPM-pop arranged by Kenneth Reodica, Maghihiwalay Din Kayo features a track rooted in novelty elements — highlighting Layug's way of telling stories through an antic yet sober approach upholding his artistic intent: to produce music that will make people feel good. He reckons, this track is certainly his “funniest song" to date.

Among his previously released tracks include his debut single under O/C Records, Landiin Niyo Na Ako released in March 2021, and Kahit Ano, his single from the Camp Demos Vol. 1 album released in 2018 featuring various artists from the industry.

Talking about the artist he aims to present to people through this single, Eugene reflects on his musical journey — as a busker and now a recording artist. He affirms, his artistic approach in his songs will remain connected with his audience through showcasing his truest sense as a musician.

“Naniniwala kasi ako na you have to be honest to your art. Unahin mo kung sino ka," says Eugene.

"Maghihiwalay Din Kayo" is now available on all digital streaming platforms, including Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube. The official visualizer can be streamed via O/C Records YouTube channel. (Denise Simone)
