An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted Cagayan around 12:36 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivols) said.

The epicenter of the quake was traced 16 kilometers (km) northwest of Dalupiri Island, Calayan, Cagayan. It was tectonic in origin, which means that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
According to Phivolcs, the quake was felt as a “strong shaking” at Intensity V in Calayan, Cagayan, while it was “moderately strong” at Intensity IV in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte. It was also recorded as a “weak tremor” at Intensity II in Paoay, Ilocos Norte.
Meanwhile, Phivolcs likewise disclosed that an instrumental Intensity IV was also recorded in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte, Intensity III in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte, Intensity II in Sinait, Ilocos Sur; Peñablanca, and Gonzaga, Cagayan, and Intensity I in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.
Residents of the aforementioned areas were advised to remain vigilant as aftershocks are likely to occur due to this quake.
