An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 hit waters off Batanes around 8:41 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
The quake was initially reported with a magnitude of 5.3 but Phivolcs later revised it to 5.1.

The epicenter of the quake was recorded 41 kilometers (km) southwest of Sabtang, Batanes. It was tectonic in origin which indicates that it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
Meanwhile, the quake was “moderately strong” at Intensity IV in Sabtang, Batanes, while it was felt as a “weak tremor” in Uyugan, Ivana, Mahatao, and Basco, Batanes.
It was likewise recorded at Intensity I in Itbayat.
Phivolcs said that aftershocks are likely to occur due to the earthquake.
