Meralco showed no signs of rust despite a long layoff and cruised past NLEX, 110-100, as the PBA Governors’ Cup finally resumed Friday, Feb. 11 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Import Tony Bishop set the tone early while getting ample support from Cliff Hodge, Allein Maliksi, Chris Newsome and Aaron Black as the Bolts improved to a perfect 3-0 record in the first PBA game after a 47-day break due to last month’s COVID-19 surge.
The Bolts won convincingly even after losing John Pinto to Barangay Ginebra San Miguel and opting not to use prized addition Chris Banchero.
Coach Norman Black said Banchero, who was signed last Feb. 1, only joined the Bolts practice on the eve of the restart but will likely be available for the game against Ginebra on Sunday.
NLEX dropped its second in a row after a 4-0 start a sluggish showing late in the first quarter put Meralco in control for good.
“I think we've located a formula that we can use to win: it starts with defense. Well, it starts with Tony Bishop, actually, being a very, very solid import and being very consistent every game, but it really starts with defense,” said Black.
“The fact that we can actually go out and slow teams down and get them out of their offense. And once we control the defensive boards, it gives us a chance to get out and run. and once we start running, we have a better chance of winning games.
“Our half-court offense is still a work in progress, but when we can push the pace, we have a good chance of winning,” he added.
Bishop had 32 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists in another impressive performance in his import matchup with NLEX’s KJ McDaniels.
McDaniels scored 41 points and added 12 rebounds and three blocks for the Road Warriors.
But Bishop had more help from the Meralco locals, with Maliksi starting hot from the field before ending the afternoon with 17 points and Hodge hustling on both ends for 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Aaron Black was placed in the starting lineup with Pinto gone and Banchero still not ready to man the point and scored 19 points while Newsome added 18 points, eight rebounds and three steals.
Kevin Alas had a quiet 16 points for NLEX while rookie guard Matt Nieto made 10 points and two assists in his debut.
Adding more concern for the Road Warriors is the finger injury sustained by Calvin Oftana in the second half.
