Senatorial bet Matula supports call for wage hike in Laguna

Labor leader and senatorial aspirant Sonny Matula reiterated his support to workers groups filing for a wage increase petition in Laguna.

Matula, who joined Vice President Leni Robredo on the campaign trail in Laguna on Friday, Feb. 11, also heads one of the wage hike petitioners, the Federation of Free Workers (FFW).

"The best way to help people get back on their feet from the ravages of the pandemic is to give jobs with decent wages," Matula said during their campaign.

Workers from Workers Initiative for a Wage Increase or WIN 4 WIN recently filed a petition with the Regional Tripartite wages and productivity Board in CALABARZON to raise the minimum wage to 750 pesos per day.

The current minimum wage in the region ranges from 317 pesos in Cabuyao to 373 pesos in Sta. Rosa and 400 pesos in Biñan.

"While workers need ayuda (aid), the more permanent and lasting solution to the pandemic and poverty for that matter is to raise wages," Matula emphasized.

"Wala naman pong pinag-iba ang sikmura ng mga kababayan natin sa Laguna sa nga kapatid natin sa Maynila. Kung pareho naman ang lakas at husay nila sa pagtrabaho, bakit magkakaiba ang kanilang sahod," he added.

Calls to revert to a national minimum wage system and realize the Constitutional mandate of establishing a living wage is at the core of Matula’s Labor Agenda, together with the other labor sector candidates, Neri Colmenares and Bong Labog.
