Magnitude 5.1 quake jolts Sarangani -- Phivolcs

A 5.1-magnitude earthquake shook parts of southern Mindanao at around 10:25 p.m., Friday, Feb. 11, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The epicenter of the earthquake was traced 49 kilometers (km) northwest of Kiamba, Sarangani at a shallow depth of 24 km.

Phivolcs initially measured the earthquake at magnitude 5.3 but later revised it to magnitude 5.1.

It said the quake was moderately strong at Intensity IV in Kiamba and Maitum in Sarangani, while it was felt as a "weak" tremor at Intensity III in General Santos City; Zamboanga City; Cotabato City; Maasim, Sarangani; and Norala, Tupi and Lake Sebu, South Cotabato.

Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

It advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur due to this earthquake.
