People can no own a digital piece of the famous artwork
There are still a lot of things to discuss regarding the metaverse and non-fungible tokens (NFTs), but, for many, these digital creations are the future. And the latest to join this coded universe is Gustav Klimt’s “The Kiss” as a series of NFTs.

Led by the NFT investment fund company artèQ and the Austrian Gallery Belvedere, the project of digitalizing the artwork aims to create “a personal connection to the masterpiece” and to make it a “part of a community that will be written in the pages of the history of art and viewed as a pioneer in the metaverse.”
The 1908/1909 piece will be divided into 100 x 100 grids, creating 10,000 pieces of high definition tiles, allowing collectors to own a portion of the digitized painting. “The exclusive drop is limited to 10.000 pieces and each one is a unique part of the high-resolution image of The Kiss. The cost of one NFT is estimated at 1.850 €, and each one is imprinted with the number and its distinctive coordinates,” according to The Kiss website.
After successfully signing up for its release, people are given the chance to purchase “The Kiss NFT” and have the option to include a special message for a loved one. To commemorate it, a dedication page and a digital wall will be made at the upper Belvedere Museum in Vienna, Austria presenting all the romantic notes after the drop.
“What does it mean to own a work of art in the digital age? The rise of NFTs, which has preoccupied the art world since 2020, has given fresh impetus to this intriguing question,” says Stella Rollig, general director of the Belvedere. “The conversion of digital reproductions into virtual originals opens up new forms of participation that, in financial terms, should be taken seriously, yet can also be viewed playfully.”
“We are proud that artèQ’s innovative technology and concept was chosen for the implementation of this globally unique project and that we were allowed to become a partner of the project,” adds Farbod Sadeghian, founder of artèQ.
“The Kiss NFT” drop will take place on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, 2022. Get to know more about it here.
