'Wait and observe': Expert urges gov't to observe trends before easing protocols

A health reform advocate urged the national government to “wait and observe” in the next two weeks if the cases will once again spike up before easing the country’s Alert Level status for coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Health reform advocate and former National Task Force (NTF) against COVID-19 special adviser Dr. Anthony “Tony” Leachon, in a Facebook post on Thursday, Feb. 10, said that the country needs to “look at the horizon” and “think ahead” before easing the COVID-19 protocols.

“We want to reopen the economy with the reduction of cases and the favorable indicators, but we need to look at the horizon and think ahead,” said Leachon in a Facebook post.

Leachon likewise reiterated that the country’s vaccination program and booster doses “are not yet at par” with the rest of the world, adding that the pediatric vaccination drive has just begun.

“We need to review carefully the transition from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 1 in the National Capital Region (NCR) due to mobility issues related to the political campaign kick-off,” he added.

The health expert said that he hopes that the national government could “wait until March 1” and observe the situation in the next two weeks before easing the protocols.
