Sara on Joey's backing of VP Leni: 'He is a friend, may pulitika man o wala'

Vice presidential candidate and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio says that Albay 2nd district Rep. Joey Salceda will remain a friend despite his endorsement of opposition standard-bearer, Vice President Leni Robredo for the presidency.

"Susuportahan natin si Cong Joey Salceda sa kung ano man yung direction niya in politics. He is a friend, may pulitika man o wala (We will support Cong Joey Salceda whatever direction he takes in politics. He is a friend, whether there are politics or no politics)," Duterte-Carpio said in a chance interview with reporters in Santa Maria, Bulacan on Thursday, Feb. 10.

Salceda is a known backer of President Duterte, the lady mayor's father, and the Dutertes as a whole. Robredo is a fellow Bicolano of the congressman.

Duterte-Carpio, the chairperson of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD) party, is the running mate of presidential aspirant and former senator Bongbong Marcos.

Based on Salceda's pronouncements, he is inclined to back Robredo, not Marcos, in the upcoming May elections.

But Duterte-Carpio didn't find any issue with it. She recalled that she and Salceda almost met during her motorcade's Bicol swing last week.

"In fact noon dumaan kami sa (when we went to) Albay, he was out there waiting for us, unfortunately hindi namin alam saan na parte doon sa nadaanan namin ang kanyang bahay (we didn't know where his house was located). And I also left a thank you video para sa kanya doon sa (for him in) Albay.

"Of course I'll see him again dahil mayroon na kaming schedule na dapat bumalik kami doon sa Albay (because we are scheduled to come back to Albay)," she said.

On Thursday afternoon, Salceda sent a statement to reporters explaining his support for a Leni-Sara tandem.

In a another chance interview later in the day in Meycauyan City, Bulacan, Duterte-Carpio said that she and Marcos have agreed to accept such endorsements even if it does not benefit the both of them.

"Napag-usapan na namin ‘yan ni Apo BBM na (Me and Apo BBM have spoken about that and) either of us will not refuse endorsements whether individually or collectively at nagpapasalamat po tayo sa lahat ng mga kaibigan at supporters natin sa buong bansa (and we thank all of our friends and supporters in the entire country)," she said.
