The Department of Health (DOH) said that about 38,000 children aged five to 11-years-old have been vaccinated against the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) so far.
“Naka 38,000 na tayo (We have 38,000) after three days,” said DOH Secretary Francisco Duque III during a briefing on Thursday, Feb. 10. The Philippines rolled out its COVID-19 vaccination drive for the said age group last Monday, Feb. 7.
Duque also noted that only four children experience “minor side effects.”
“Meron tayong apat na natukoy na nagkaroon ng minor side effect. At ang katumbas niyan ay 0.01 percent ng lahat ng nabakunahan (We have four people who experienced minor side effects. And that is equivalent to 0.01 percent of all those vaccinated),” he said.
“Wala pong naiulat na nagkaroon ng major side effects. Harinawa, sana wala naman (No major side effects have been reported. Hopefully, no one will experience that),” he added.
Meanwhile, an official of the National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) said they are monitoring the health status of an 11-year-old child in Manila who reportedly received a Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine intended for adults.
“Minomonitor po yung bata na ito and yung incident na ito. We are getting updates kung anong nangyayari or ano nang ginagawa ng ating implementers on the ground regarding this incident (The child is being monitored. We are getting updates on what is happening or what our implementers on the ground are doing regarding this incident),” said NVOC Co-Lead Dr. Dr. Kezia Rosario during a public briefing.
Rosario also reminded vaccination sites to be cautious when administering vaccines.
“Kailangan mag ingat sa pagbibigay ng mga bakuna kasi iba nga yung formulation ng 12-years-old and above compared doon sa 5 to 11-years-old na formulation (We need to be careful when giving vaccines because the formulation of 12-years-old and above is different compared to the five to 11-years-old formulation),” she added.
The NVOC official also encouraged parents to get their kids vaccinated.
“Sinabi ng ating mga eksperto na ang mga bakunang ito na binibigay natin ay really safe and effective po and hindi tayo dapat mabahala sa mga side effects (Our experts said that the vaccines are really safe and effective and we should not worry about side effects),” she said.
“Hindi natin kinakait na may mga mild side effects na pwedeng mangyari sa bata as any other drug or vaccine. Pero ang alam natin na ang bakunang ito ay really safe for our children po (We are not denying that there are mild side effects that can happen to a child just like with any other drug or vaccine. But what we do know is that this vaccine is really safe for our children),” she added.
