The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded a 5.9-magnitude earthquake offshore of Northern Samar on Friday afternoon, Dec. 9.
Phivolcs said the quake struck 105 kilometers (km) northeast of Mapanas, Northern Samar at around 2:33 a.m.
Its instruments also measured the quake at Intensity III in Mapanas and Palapag in Northern Samar; Intensity II in Rosario and San Roque in Northern Samar and Prieto Diaz and Bulusan in Sorsogon; Intensity I in Legazpi City and Tabaco in Albay, Mercedes and Daet in Camarines Norte, Pili in Camarines Sur, Hernani and Can-Avid in Eastern Samar, and Hilongos, Dulag, Kananga, Abuyog, Alangalang and Baybay in Leyte.
Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
