A resolution honoring the life of the Philippine’s “Queen of Kundiman” Sylvia La Torre has been filed in the Senate.

Sen. Manuel “Lito” Lapid has filed Senate Resolution No. 338, expressing the profound sympathy and sincere condolences of the Senate of the Philippines on the death and honoring the life of the legendary singer and Filipino icon.

“La Torre, was a true artist in every sense of the word, her immeasurable contributions to Philippine Folk and popular music are unparalleled,” Lapid said in the resolution.

Lapid also said La Torre’s artistry transcended through time and has inspired fellow artists that are also considered today’s icons in the Philippine entertainment industry.

“Her classics such as ‘Waray, Waray,’ ‘Your Face Sounds Familiar,’ ‘Sa Kabukiran,’ and ‘Mutya ng Pasig,’ and many other songs have been adapted and performed by the likes of Freddie Aguilar and Elizabeth Ramsey and many more artists who had her as their role model,” he further said.

The senator said La Torre was not only a musical icon, but also a cinematic treasure, having made films with Sampaguita Pictures and Seiko Films, starring in “Ang Maestra” in 1941 and in “One Two Bato, Three Four Bapor” with film icons such as Eddie Garcia and other Filipino artists.

“Sylvia La Torre was a one of a kind multi-faceted artist who dedicated her life to her craft, in turn becoming a source of inspiration for the artists of the next generation, proving that one can do more than they think,” he said.

La Torre died on December 1, 2022. Her death was confirmed by her granddaughter and fellow actress Anna Maria Perez de Tagle.

She was a scholar of the University of Santo Tomas’ Conservatory of Music. She wrote and recorded over 300 songs in her lifetime.
