'Jiang Zemin a visionary leader' --- VP Duterte

Vice President Sara Duterte paid her last respects on Monday, Dec. 5, to former Chinese president Jiang Zemin who died of illness at age of 96.

Duterte, who serves as the Education secretary in a concurrent capacity, personally visited the Chinese Embassy in Manila to mourn Jiang’s passing in the presence of Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian and other embassy officials.

In a Facebook post, Huang shared photos of Duterte at the embassy where she visited the photo wall of China-Philippines friendship.

He said the Philippine vice president “recollected the historic moments of former President Jiang's engagement with the Philippine leaders and people.”

Jiang, who led China for a decade of rapid economic growth after the Tiananmen crackdown in 1989, died in his home city of Shanghai last Wednesday of leukaemia and multiple organ failure, Xinhua news agency said.

Duterte went to the embassy to sign the condolence book for the demise of Jiang.

The Vice President described the late Chinese as a “visionary leader who dedicated his life and work to his country and people.”

“He was behind a legacy of leadership, wisdom, and distinguished public service. I join the Filipino people in celebrating his achievements in forging closer bilateral ties between the Philippines and China,” she wrote.

According to Huang, the “outstanding contributions and effective governance” of the late president led to “China’s economic transformation and deeper engagement with the broader international community.”

“The Filipino people will remember his achievements in forging closer bilateral ties between the Philippines and China,” the ambassador said.

Apart from Duterte, former president & now Senior Deputy Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of the House of Representatives and Senator Imee Marcos conveyed their condolences over Jiang’s death.
