11 more people hurt due to firecrackers, 'boga' top cause of injuries—DOH

Eleven additional fireworks-related injuries were recorded by the Department of Health (DOH) on Dec. 30 to 31.
The new cases brought the tally of fireworks-related injuries to 52 since the DOH started its surveillance last Dec. 21.
The DOH noted that the current total was 30 percent higher compared to the 40 cases recorded during the same period last year.
Western Visayas and the National Capital Region reported the most number of injuries with 11 cases each, the DOH said.
Bicol Region followed with six cases. Four cases each were logged in Ilocos Region, Central Luzon, and Soccsksargen.
Central Visayas had three injuries, while two cases each were reported in Cagayan Valley, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Davao Region. One case was recorded in Cordillera Administrative Region.
Of the 52 cases, 45 were male individuals, the DOH noted.
"Twenty-three cases sustained eye injuries and two cases had blast/burn injuries with amputation. Thirty-three cases were actively involved," the DOH said.
"Thirty-one injuries occurred at home, 20 occurred in the street, and one occurred in the farm. Five cases were allegedly intoxicated with alcohol at the time of injury. Six cases were hospitalized. No death was reported," it added.
Illegal firecracker boga remained the top cause of injuries, involving 18 cases, the DOH said.
Seven cases were due to five-star, six cases were because of the use of super lolo, four cases due to whistle bomb, and three cases due to kwitis.
"There was no reported case due to fireworks ingestion there was no reported case due to stray bullet injury," the DOH said.
