Quiapo's Black Nazarene visits Antipolo

Devotees of Quiapo’s Black Nazarene in Rizal Province are expected to welcome the pilgrim image of the Christ in crimson robe as it visits Antipolo City from Dec. 30 to Jan. 1 ahead of the celebration of its feast day on January 9.

A motorcade carried the image of the Black Nazarene from Quiapo Church in Manila on Friday and reached the Antipolo City proper at around 7 a.m.

From Antipolo’s Ninoy Aquino Park, the motorcade proceeded to P. Oliveros Street, then to General Luna, then to J. Sumulong Street towards Sto. Nino Street, then to C. Lawis, then J. P. Rizal and back to P. Oliveros before arriving at the International Shrine of the Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, otherwise known as the Antipolo Cathedral, around 8:30 a.m.

Hundreds of devotees of the Black Nazarene, some coming from other parts of the province, gathered outside the cathedral for the official welcome mass at 9 a.m.

Devotees were enjoined to participate in the activities at the cathedral as the event is part of the feast day celebration of the Black Nazarene, including the praying of the Holy Rosary at 8 p.m. on Friday.

In a post on its official Facebook page, the Birhen ng Antipolo-Our Lady of Peace and Good Voyage, it announced that the pilgrim image of the Black Nazarene will stay at the cathedral until past noon on New Year’s Day, Sunday.

The cathedral also announced that as part of the Black Nazarene’s traditional feast day, the Antipolo Cathedral will offer a nine-day novena mass every 12 noon starting on December 31 up to January 8, the eve of the feast day of Quiapo’s revered image of Jesus of Nazareth.

Devotees from all over the province and nearby cities in eastern part of Metro Manila are expected to attend the church services as part of their deeply-rooted devotion and vow to the Black Nazarene.

The city government has announced that motorists should expect the flow of traffic to slow down during the motorcade.

The Quiapo Church had earlier announced that the traditional "traslacion" procession remains cancelled in January due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
