A look back at the cars of 2022

The year’s most popular models

The past year saw a whole buffet of new models made available in the market. Those looking to buy a new car were in luck, thanks to the sheer number of new options available. In this article, we run through some of the most significant models launched this past year. These are definitely vehicles worth considering and also serve as signposts to where the market is heading.

Toyota models

This year, Toyota launched quite a number of new models, from sedans, to SUVs to family vehicles, and even one for small businesses. Easily the most popular among them is the new Raize (1.0 Turbo: P1,051,000). Positioned as a small crossover, the Raize offered first time buyers a vehicle with a compact size, but with all the benefits of a crossover, and high-tech in-car conveniences.

Another set of significant models were Toyota’s family car duo: the Avanza (1.5 G: P1,059,000) and Veloz (1.5 V: P1,250,000). These two models received a major change, moving from a rigid rear-wheel drive platform to a more comfortable unibody front-wheel drive platform. This allows the Avanza and Veloz to offer more car-like driving dynamics and comfort, making them easier to drive and offering a better ride.

Finally, Toyota also offers small business owners the perfect vehicle to expand. That vehicle is the Toyota Lite Ace (panel van: P685,000). Absent for several decades from the Philippine market, the Lite Ace finally made its return in 2022 as a versatile business vehicle. It’s available as a panel van, pickup truck, cab and chassis and a variety of other configurations to meet your needs.

Nissan models

Family MPVs were quite the popular car segment this year. Not surprisingly, Nissan also launched their own contender in the segment, the Livina (1.5 VL: P1,209,000). In many ways, Nissan was one of the pioneers of this segment with the seven-seater Grand Livina launched some years back. This year, it takes on a larger form, now taller, longer, and with higher ground clearance for more versatility.

Nissan Kicks

Another vehicle launched was Nissan’s first hybrid, the Kicks e-Power (VL: P1,509,000). Unlike most hybrids, the Kicks uses an electric drivetrain, with the gasoline motor serving as a generator. This allows it to run silently and smoothly when the engine is off, as well as deliver the quicker acceleration EVs are known for. Best of all, there’s no range anxiety thanks to the engine that charges the battery.

Honda models

Yet another contender for family MPVs came from Honda in the form of the BR-V (VX Sensing: P1,390,000). The long-awaited update for the seven-seater finally arrived, bringing with it a whole new look and some handy Honda SENSING features. The BR-V boasts of a more SUV-like form with the addition of SENSING features that act as a second set of eyes on the road watching out for dangers.

Honda also brought some timely updates to its smaller crossover, the HR-V (RS Turbo Sensing: P1,739,000). This new model gets a coupe-like form making it look more like the sporty SUV it was always meant to be. Opt for the top-of-the-line RS and enjoy the same turbo power delivery as the Civic RS.

Ford models

Those looking for something a little more rugged were no doubt made aware of Ford’s offerings: the next generation Ranger (4x4 Wildtrak: P1,885,000) and Everest (4x4 Titanium+: P2,495,000). These two vehicles brought in a new, more rugged look, even more high tech in-car features, making them even more enjoyable to drive. Both models boast of handy features like adaptive cruise control and remote functions you can access with your phone. Their off-road abilities have also been upgraded thanks to cameras and terrain modes that conquer rough roads even better.

Mitsubishi models

With all the new seven-seaters now in the market, it’s not surprising Mitsubishi also offered a new Xpander (GLS: P1,180,000). The top-seller of the segment has brought with it some key upgrades like new lights and more useful storage spaces.

Mitsubishi also gave its top SUV and pickup some love with the Strada and Montero Sport Ralliart editions (4x2 Ralliart: P2,122,000). These two vehicles bear striking graphics and unique accents exclusive to the Ralliart trim. These models are hard to miss thanks to these additions and a must have for fans of Mitsubishi’s motorsports legacy.

Hyundai Stargazer

It’s starting to look like the year of seven-seater MPVs as Hyundai also joined the competitive segment with their Stargazer (GLS Premium: P1,258,000). Inspired by the larger Staria van, the Stargazer also bears the same futuristic styling, paired with minimalist interior to give passengers a true sci-fi feel.

Chery Tiggo 8 PRO PHEV

2022 was also a good year for hybrids as fuel prices soared to record highs. While there were many small hybrids on offer, Chery had a solution for those with large families. The Tiggo 8 PRO PHEV (P2,400,000) is a plug-in hybrid vehicle. This means it has all the benefits of a hybrid with the added bonus of being able to charge the battery at home and run the first few kilometers of your trip in EV mode.

Geely Emgrand

With all the new crossovers, it certainly seems like the once favorite family sedan is on its way out. Geely, however, still has faith in the segment and launched its Emgrand (1.5 Premium: P999,000) sedan this year. Positioned against the likes of the Vios and City, the Emgrand offers more space, a more luxurious interior, and more tech features than most of its competition.
