San Beda College Alabang to launch St. Thomas More's Unprofitable Servant Award

On Dec. 7, coinciding with the golden anniversary of San Beda College Alabang (SBCA), the institution will award its first ever Doctor of Laws Honoris Causa to the Honorable Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court, a title worthy of his name and honor. Justice Hernando was appointed to the Supreme Court by then President Rodrigo Duterte on Oct. 10, 2018 and became the country’s 180th Associate Justice.

On the same day, will also hold an academic convocation for the twenty SBCA School of Law (SOL) faculty members who have completed their Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from the San Beda University Graduate School of Law and to award the School of Law’s first Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Among the graduates will be the newly-appointed Court of Appeals Justice Selma P. Alaras and Legal Education Board Chairperson Anna Marie Melanie B. Trinidad.

The event will also see the formal launching of the St. Thomas More’s Unprofitable Servant Award. This recognition is given to SOL faculty members who have devoted much time and talent to pursue further studies – all to be even more excellent in their profession and ultimately be of greater service to their community. Thirty-two SOL faculty members will be presented with this award for having exemplified the combined qualities of excellence, diligence, and humility.

The program will begin with a mass officiated by Rev. Fr. Gerardo Ma. De Villa, OSB at the Chapel of St. Benedict, followed by the academic convocation, giving of awards, and the conferment of the Doctor of Laws degree. The night will cap off with a testimonial dinner and entertainment at the Manny Reyes Hall.

No less than four incumbent Supreme Court Justices are expected to attend the event in honoring one of their brethren, namely: Justice Japar B. Dimaampao, Justice Samuel H. Gaerlan, Justice Antonio T. Kho, and Justice Mario V. Lopez. Three of the said Justices are Bedan themselves: Justice Gaerlan, Justice Kho, and Justice Lopez. On the other hand, Justice Dimaampao taught in the SBCA SO for many years. Another expected guest, Gov. Aurelio “Oyie” Matias-Umali of Nueva Ecija, a classmate of Justice Hernando, will grace the event with his presence.
