1st ICTSI Croatia-Austria rail cargo service launched

The first regular train connection from the Croatian port of Rijeka and Enns in Austria was launched last month.

International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)'s strategic partner in Croatia, Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT), made the announcement this week.

“For the first time ever, major Austrian shippers can be directly connected by rail to AGCT in Rijeka, providing a valuable alternative route with reliable transit times," said Emmanuel Papagiannakis, AGCT chief executive officer.

"With the cooperation of all partners including Maersk, CD Cargo and CTE Enns, we believe the product will remain successful and attract more shippers," he noted.

The first train for Container Terminal Enns (CTE) departed from Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) on November 11.

Maersk Line operated the block train while CD Cargo Adria provided rail services.

“Following the first ever direct trains to the Czech Republic in May, the Austria connection further adds to a growing network of regular weekly block trains," according to Papagiannakis.

The block trains now serve Serbia, Hungary and Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well.

AGCT is increasingly gaining significance as a gateway for Central Europe and Southeast Europe, he pointed out.

ICTSI forged a 30-year strategic partnership with Luka Rijeka D.D. in 2011, for the operation, management, and development of Adriatic Gate Container Terminal (AGCT) at the Port of Rijeka, Croatia’s main seaport.

ICTSI’s portfolio of terminals and projects are located in developed and emerging market economies in the Asia Pacific, the Americas, and Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
