ILOILO CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways has proposed to build bike lanes on the national highway in Aklan.
The DPWH recently conducted a road validation process for the project with the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
“The proposed bicycle lanes in Aklan will provide a safe and organized transportation system among the cyclists here in the province. DPWH and DOTr propose this project to achieve the lanes that the traveling public essentially needs,” said DPWH-6 Regional Director Nerie Bueno.
Personnel from the DPWH-6 Regional Office, DPWH-Aklan District Engineering Office, and DOTr conducted assessment in the capital of Kalibo and Malay, where world-famous Boracay Island is located.
The validation seeks to provide a transportation roadway based on prescribed guidelines for bicycle facilities on national roads.
In Western Visayas, the DPWH-6 has constructed bike lanes in the regional capital of Iloilo City to promote a systematic public transportation system through the use of bikes which aims to ensure safe access for cyclists as well as other road users.
