Nothing 'improper' in priest's TikTok dance in front of altar – Archdiocese of Cebu
CEBU CITY -- The Archdiocese of Cebu (AOC) found nothing irregular in the now viral video of a priest doing a TikTok dance inside a church in Danao City in Northern Cebu.
Msgr. Joseph Tan, spokesperson of (AOC), said what the priest did ‘is not encouraged but no penalties required.” In the video that was uploaded by netizen Yeng Abinales on Dec. 18, a priest is seen together with acolytes dancing to the tune of Vietnamese song “Ting Ting Tang Ting.” The video drew various reactions as it had already garnered 7,900 ‘happy,’ 2,300 ‘sad’ and 1,500 ‘angry’ reactions with 23,000 shares.
Tan said the incident was a ‘non-issue except that it may offend the sensitivities of some in terms of propriety but it is not a moral issue.’ Even if the dance was done in front of the altar, what the priest did was not improper, said Tan.
Tan emphasized that the priest performed the TikTok dance in the context of a Christmas carol.
“That is why some may feel that it is inappropriate but it was done outside of the Mass. His intention was to spread some holiday cheers but not all find that proper,” Tan said.
Tan however admitted that the priest could have removed his vestments that could have made the actuations less offensive.
While some may have been unhappy with the TikTok dance, Tan said the priest had no intention ‘to desecrate the altar willfully.’
