Number of fireworks-related injuries increase to 25 ahead of New Year's eve

The Department of Health (DOH) recorded a total of 25 fireworks-related injuries since its monitoring started last Dec. 21.
DOH Officer-in-Charge Maria Rosario Vergeire said that five more people sustained injuries due to the use of fireworks on Dec. 26 to 27.
“Ang atin pong mga current na injuries sa paputok ay 25 na ngayon (Our current fireworks injuries are now at 25),” she said in a press briefing on Tuesday, Dec. 27.
“Last year at this same time period, we have 22 cases. So, our cases right now are 14 percent higher than last year,” she added.
In a separate report, the DOH said twenty-three of them were male aged between one to 64.
The DOH also noted that 13 cases "sustained eye injuries while two cases had blast/burn injuries with amputation."
“Eighteen injuries occurred at home while seven occurred in the street. Five cases were allegedly intoxicated with alcohol at the time of the injury. Four cases were admitted. No death was reported,” the DOH said.
The top fireworks involved were boga, whistle bomb, kwitis, and five-star, the DOH said.
“Nakahanda po ang aming mga hospital 100 percent; kung meron pong mga injuries na mangyayari; andyan po mga ospital namin para maagapan natin ang mga injuries na ito para hindi na po magkaroon ng kumplikasyon (Our hospitals are 100 percent ready. If there are any injuries that will happen, our hospitals are there to manage these to avoid any other complications),” Vergeire assured.
