2 die as fishing boat struck by big waves capsizes in Southern Leyte
TACLOBAN CITY -- Two fishermen died while six others survived after their fishing boat capsized in the sea of Barangay Manglit, Pintuyan, Southern Leyte, on Christmas Day.
Authorities identified the fatalities as Rowel Dialel, 50, and Amay Paglinawan, 49. They were declared dead on arrival at the Pintuyan District Hospital.
The survivors were Gelermo Habagay, 30; Tomy Deskarten, 46; Garry Deskarten, 47; Romeo Abalida, 26; Ariel Talido, 29; and Kenneth Brigole, 24, all residents of Barangay San Antonio, Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.
Reports disclosed that the fishermen delivered their catch in Pintuyan and have not yet returned to Mindanao because of the bad weather and big waves.
They decided to rest and anchored their fishing boat approximately 100 meters away from the shoreline.
However, big waves generated by sudden strong winds hit their boat which capsized.
Survivors were placed under the temporary custody of the local disaster risk reduction office.
