Search on for 4 missing fishermen in Cebu; trips cancelled due to gale warning
Authorities have conducted a search and rescue (SAR) operation to find four fishermen who, two days before Christmas, went missing while venturing at sea in Cebu while the province was being battered by gale force winds due to northeast monsoon.

The missing fishermen were identified by the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) District Central Visayas as Gilbert Pepito, 37; Gaspar Yassi, 45; Louie Lunitos, 34; and Redol Yassi, 42; all natives of Sitio Look, Barangay Tapilon, Daanbantayan, Cebu.
Lt. Junior Grade Stephen Pagcaliwagan, PCG District Central Visayas operations officer, said the fishermen were onboard their fishing boat, “FB Chegie,” when they left Barangay Tapilon around 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 23, to fish.
While the fishermen were on their way to Kinatarcan Island in Sta. Fe, Bantayan Island, their boat was suddenly battered by strong current and big waves.
Based on initial investigation, the fishermen managed to take shelter at Kinatarcan Island around 5 p.m. due to the rough sea condition. But after departing the island an hour later to go back to Barangay Tapilon, they never made it back home, prompting their families to report the case to the authorities.
Pagcaliwagan said the PCG has coordinated with the local government unit of Daanbantayan and volunteers from civilian group "Bantay Dagat" to expedite the SAR operations.
Other Coast Guard stations in nearby areas such as those located in the municipalities of Sta. Fe and Malapascua Island were told to assist in the search and rescue operation.
Strong winds
Meanwhile, many passengers were left stranded after the Coast Guard Station (CGS) Northern Cebu suspended trips for all types of vessels or watercraft in northern Cebu due to the gale warning issued by the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa).
Pagasa said that strong to gale force winds associated with the northeast monsoon have been affecting parts of the country, including Cebu.
“This station is temporarily suspending voyages for all types of vessels/watercraft with 250 GRT (gross ton) and below plying the route within the Coast Guard Station Northern Cebu AOR (area of responsibility),” the CGS Northern Cebu said in an advisory.
Cdr. Elaine Pangilinan, commander of CGS Northern Cebu, said the voyage of vessels would resume once weather and sea condition improve.
