4 fishers reported missing in Cebu

CEBU CITY – Four fishermen went missing while fishing in the sea of Kinatarcan Island in Sta. Fe town, northern Cebu province on Friday, Dec. 23.

They were identified as Gilbert Pepito, 37; Gaspar Yassi, 45; Louie Lubitos, 34, and Redol Yassi, 42.

The Philippine Coast Guard-Central Visayas (PCG-7) said they departed Barangay Tapilon, Daanbantayan town, Cebu aboard fishing boat FCBA Chegie.

The PCG said the fishermen, all residents of Tapilon, Daanbantayan, encountered rough seas, prompting them to sail back to Tapilon but were unable to arrive.

Coast Guard Lt. Junior Grade Stephen Pagcaliwagan, operations officer of PCG-7, said search and rescue operations were immediately conducted after they disappeared.

They have yet to be located as of 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 24.

Meanwhile, four persons survived after the motorbanca they were riding capsized in the sea of Barangay Tingo in Olango Island, Lapu-Lapu City on Friday night.

The group was headed to Barangay San Vicente in Olango Island from Hingotanan islet in Bohol province to deliver fish and seashells when their motorbanca capsized.

They were able to swim to the coastline of Barangay Tingo where some residents brought them to the Santa Rosa Community Hospital in Olango for minor bruises.

Their identities were not disclosed.

Several PCG stations in Central Visayas prohibited vessels less than 250 gross tonnage from sailing after the State weather state bureau issued a gale warning at 5 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 24.
