P1.6-M pork products seized in Aklan

PORK-based products such as ham were recently seized by the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in Malay town, Aklan province. (BAI Aklan)

ILOILO CITY – The possible entry of African Swine Fever was prevented after the Bureau of Animal Industry recently seized pork products worth P1.6 million at the Caticlan Jetty Port in Boracay Island in Malay town, Aklan province.

“This was part of our 24-hour monitoring with the Aklan Provincial Veterinary Office,” said Dr. Wendel Maglantay, BAI Aklan provincial coordinator.

The provincial government of Aklan has banned all live hogs and pork-based products from areas with African Swine Fever cases, among them much of Mindanao as well as Iloilo City and Iloilo and Guimaras provinces.

Among the apprehended shipments were 74 styrofoam boxes of various pork products as well as eight boxes of ham.

Maglantay said these originated from Luzon and bound for Capiz province, Bacolod City, and Negros Occidental province.

These were sent back to their place of origin.
