Good times: Lagman shares menu for P4 noche buena during 1950s
Amid the public outrage over the Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) suggested P500 noche buena, Albay 1st district Rep. Edcel Lagman shared on Twitter a hearty menu for the traditional Chirstmas meal that only costs P4.

The catch is, Lagman is talking about the peso power some 70 years ago, and not the inflation-ravaged Philippine currency of today.
"Memories from my childhood: Noche Buena for a family of five in Albay in the 1950s- chicken arroz caldo (P1.20), suman-latik (P.50), sotanghon guisado (P1.10), paksiw na pata (P1.20), total: P4.00," recalled the independent minority solon.
According to the Bicolano, the minimum wage at that time was P4.00 a day, while the exchange rate was P2.00 to the mighty United States (US) $1.00.

Fast-forward several decades to 2022, when assembling a respectable noche buena for the family has become a challenge to everybody but the well-off.
"Today, the said menu would cost P825.00 or more than twice the daily national average minimum wage of P366.00. As time flies, the inflation rate rises," Lagman said.

The Philippines’ inflation raced to 8 percent in November 2022, the highest recorded since November 2008 or in 14 years.
It is due to such economic hardship that the DTI came up with a "price guide" for a budget noche buena worth P500. This gesture hasn't been well-taken by the public, however.
