The scammers, as disclosed by the DICT on Friday, Dec. 23, were allegedly urging the public to subject their SIMs into a “pre-registration” process, otherwise, their SIMs will be deactivated.

“Said emails inform subscribers that their accounts are being restricted in accordance with the and will only be reactivated upon their participation in a supposed pre-registration process,” said DICT in an advisory.

DICT strongly advised the public to “exercise caution” in dealing with these emails. Subscribers were particularly told not to provide any type of information nor to click suspicious links to avoid potential threats.

“Wait for the official guidelines for the registration of SIM cards,” DICT added.

The registration of new and existing SIM cards is scheduled to begin on Dec. 27. Relative to this, a joint briefing will be held by the DICT, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), as well as the Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday, Dec. 26 to further discuss matters in relation to the implementation of the law.
