Private hospitals 'ready' for holiday emergency hospital admissions – expert

Private hospitals across the Philippines are all geared up and on “high alert” for all the possible emergency hospital admissions in the upcoming holiday season, an expert said on Thursday, Dec. 22.

President of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines (PHAPi) Dr. Jose Rene De Grano said private hospitals, just like government-run hospitals across the archipelago, are ready to aid patients that will be admitted during the holiday season.

“The private hospitals are also prepared. We are prepared for whatever happens during the holiday season,” said De Grano in an interview over DZBB.

De Grano explained that hospitals in the Philippines have various alert codes. According to the expert, some hospitals are already under “code white” in light of the upcoming holiday festivities.

Code white alert indicates that a hospital is equipped, alert, and ready to respond to any emergency situation.

“Handa silang tumanggap kung ano man ang mangyari (They are ready to receive patients no matter what happens),” De Grano furthered.

Among the most common emergencies that occur during this time of the year include fire-cracker related injuries, food poisoning, as well as gastroenteritis.

Meanwhile, in terms of manpower, De Grano said hospitals across the country have enough healthcare workers to assist and lend a helping hand to patients.

“Totoo na limitasyon sa ang mga hospitals natin. But then, itong mga holiday season ay hindi naman katulad ng Covid-19 patients (It is true that there is a limitation to the number of healthcare workers in our hospitals. But then, these admissions during the holiday season are not the same as Covid-19 patients),” said De Grano.

Covid-19 patients, as stressed by the expert, are difficult to manage because they need to be isolated. Emergency admissions during the holidays, on the other hand, no longer do, which means that hospitals “will be able to manage it” easier, said De Grano.

“Kung di kaya ng government ay nandito ang private hospitals para i-admit po sila (If the government cannot do it, the private hospitals are here to admit them),” the expert furthered.
