The Department of National Defense (DND) has ordered the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) to maximize military presence in the West Philippine Sea amid reports of more Chinese activities.
In a statement, the DND said it monitored Chinese activities close to Pag-asa Island, one of the islands under Philippine control in the disputed West Philippine Sea.
"Any encroachment in the West Philippine Sea or reclamation on the features therein is a threat to the security of Pag-asa Island, which is part of Philippine sovereign territory. It also endangers the marine environment, and undermines the stability of the region," the statement read.
A number of government officials have expressed concern over reports of continuous presence of Chinese vessels swarming in disputed areas in the West Philippine Sea.
Last week, the DND also expressed concern over the reported swarming of Chinese vessels at the Iroquois Reef and Sabina Shoal in the West Philippine Sea.
Earlier, Chinese Coast Guard personnel were reported to have forcibly took a rocket debris from Philippine Navy personnel.
The DND then urged China to respect international rules amid the dispute in the area.
The Philippine government, it was recalled, won a case it filed against China before the United Nation tribunal in connection with China's claims in almost the entire South China Sea.
"We strongly urge China to uphold the prevailing rules-based international order and refrain from acts that will exacerbate tensions in the West Philippine Sea and the larger South China Sea," the DND statement read.
