Magnitude 5.0 quake jolts Bukidnon — Phivolcs

A 5.0-magnitude earthquake shook Bukidnon and neighboring areas early Tuesday morning, Dec. 20, said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

Phivolcs said the quake struck 7 kilometers northeast of Kalilangan, Bukidnon around 5:44 a.m.

It said the earthquake was felt at Intensity V (strong) in Amai Manabilang, Lanao del Sur; Intensity IV (moderately strong) in Kalilangan in Bukidnon, Kapatagan, Malabang, and Wao in Lanao del Sur, Barira and Matanog in Maguindanao, and Cotabato City; and Intensity III (weak) in Damulog, Dangcagan, Don Carlos, Kadingilan, Libona, Maramag, Pangantucan, Quezon, and Talakag in Bukidnon.

It was also felt at Intensity II (slightly felt) in Cabanglasan, Lantapan, City of Malaybalay, San Fernando, and City of Valencia in Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro City and Intensity I (scarcely perceptible) in Malitbog, Bukidnon and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.

The earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.

Phivolcs advised the public to stay vigilant as aftershocks may occur.
