The United Nations (UN) has lauded the Philippines in its campaign to recognize the contribution of migrant​s all over the world ​to the inclusive growth and sustainable development ​and to the economy ​of their​ respective​ countries​.

Many delegates of the international bloc particularly cited Minister Leila Lora-Santos of the Permanent Mission of the Philippines to the UN in New York for facilitating intergovernmental negotiations on the International Migration and Development ​resolution​​​​, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs.
The resolution was adopted, DFA added, noting that it "marked a historic feat as, for the first time in five years," it was not not voted on, thus delivering "a strong political message in support of migrants all over the world."
According to the agency, ​​the adopted resolution recognized the "positive contributions of migrants​"​ in​ their countries​ inclusive growth and sustainable development by enriching societies through human, socioeconomic and cultural capacities.
It recognize​d as well​ the role that migration plays to increase social, cultural and economic ties between nations​.
The resolution also elaborated on the importance of remittances as instruments to improve the well-being of recipients and on its potential to reduce poverty, increase access to education, health and improved housing, promote financial inclusion and increase the inflow of foreign currency, as well as ensure food supplies in rural areas.
​In fact, the resolution recalled that many countries declared remittances ​as​ essential services and eased regulations ​at the height of​ the C​ovid​-19 pandemic.
​Meanwhile, the ​International Migration and Development ​resolution also stressed the importance of​​ ​investing in human capital development by promoting entrepreneurship, education, vocational training and skills development programs and partnerships​ as well as ​productive employment creation,​ which are in​ line with labor market needs​.
These activities, it added, reduced youth unemployment, avoid​ed b​rain drain and optimiz​ed​ brain gain ​and harnessed​ the demographic dividend.
The General Assembly resolution on International Migration and Development is considered biennially by its Second Committee, and considered for adoption by both the Second Committee and the General Assembly, DFA said.
