Pregnant woman dies after being hit by 2 vehicles in Cebu City


CEBU CITY – A pregnant woman died after she was hit by two vehicles here before dawn on Monday, Dec. 19.

The victim, 19-year-old Michelle Cañeda, was crossing N. Bacalso Ave. in Barangay Pardo when she was sideswiped by a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) around 1:50 a.m.

Chief Master Sgt. Renante Abuzo said Cañeda lost her balance after was hit by the SUV. When she slumped on the pavement, a Mitsubishi van ran over her that caused her instantaneous death, said Abuzo.

The driver of the SUV sped off after the incident while the van driver was taken into police custody. Abuzo said the woman's live-in partner confirmed that the fatality was pregnant.

Meanwhile, in Barangay Linao, Talisay City, two men were killed when the motorcycle they were riding crashed into a parked trailer truck along N. Bacalso Ave. around 1:15 a.m. on Monday.

Patrolman Ariel Balde said the identities of the two fatalities were not immediately known. The victims were not wearing helmets during the incident.

No driver's license was recovered from the possession of the motorcycle driver, Balde said.

The truck driver identified as Sannie Bucar was detained after the accident, police said.

Police said Bucar stopped by the roadside to drop off his son when he heard a thud. Bucar later found the two men slumped on at the back of the truck, police said.
