DRIVING THOUGHTS
Pinky Concha Colmenares
Have all the CCTVs monitoring major streets and intersections in Quezon City been deactivated? If those are still on, then no one must be viewing the traffic problem along Quezon Avenue – specifically around the area entering the underpass at Araneta Avenue towards Manila.
For two weeks now – and I pass that way every day – traffic builds up from Timog-Quezon Avenue intersection and comes to bumper-to-bumper crawl even before reaching Roosevelt Avenue. And suddenly it becomes clear when you enter the underpass!
The reason is obvious and it gets worse every day. Vehicles that are on their way to Skyway 3, which have to make a left turn at Araneta-QA intersection, try to insert in the slow-moving line, therefore occupying a portion of a lane going to the underpass. Every day, there are arrogant motorists who loiter there to bully a law-abiding motorist waiting in line.
Once, a companion of the motorist went down from the car and posted himself between a vehicle waiting in line just to get the illegally and arrogantly positioned vehicle to insert!
At another time, with all the vehicles on their legit lanes honking their horns, a motorist whose car was clearly blocking the lane going to the underpass, opened his window and raised up his fingers forming the “peace” sign.
Last Saturday, a car suddenly swerved as if to hit the illegally-positioned vehicle, then stopped and blared his horn. It was an obvious show of disgust, one that I wish I could do.
No matter what those arrogant motorists do, they are clearly out of line and should be fined for violating traffic rules. Yet they get ahead to their destinations because they bullied their way and there is no traffic authority to check them. Meanwhile, the ones who follow traffic regulations seem to be cheated out of their lanes because of the bullies who are growing in number every day that I pass that way.
After the controversial Non-Contact Apprehension Policy (N-CAP) was shot down by motorists because its CCTVs caught too many traffic violations, are those CCTVs still monitoring traffic conditions?
Then it’s a wonder why no traffic authorities have noticed that problem. That brings me to my question – have all the “eyes in the sky” cameras been deactivated?
If so, has no traffic authority staff driven through Quezon Avenue in the last two weeks?
Christmas is less than a week away and we all know what the last few days to Christmas brings to our roads — more vehicles, heavier traffic, fading road courtesies, and impatience. It’s not the time for road rage to happen and cause injury to road users.
Will there be an empty seat at the noche buena table because of road rage?
