Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benjamin ‘Benhur’ Abalos Jr. defended on Sunday, Dec. 17, the government’s illegal drug drive amid criticisms that the current drug war is too weak.
Abalos said the campaign against illegal drugs today is geared towards due process and evidence-based procedures.
He was reacting to the statement of Sen. Ronald dela Rosa that the current campaign against illegal drugs is too soft against drug syndicates that may result in the emergence of ‘ninja cops’ and other illegal drug personalities.
Abalos noted that the anti-narcotics authorities were able to confiscate P10 billion worth of dangerous drugs since the Marcos administration took over in July.
The DILG chief admitted having talked to dela Rosa and assured that the government’s campaign against illegal drugs remains relentless similar to the intensity and fervor of the Duterte administration.
Dela Rosa was chief Philippine National Police (PNP) when ‘Oplan Tokhang’ was implemented by the Duterte administration.
Abalos emphasized that the PNP is not just going after the drug suspects but also running after groups including law enforcers who coddle them.
He also strongly opposed the proposal of Senator Robin Padilla to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of drugs, including shabu.
“With due respect, it would not help in our campaign. Drug abuse will always start with small amounts. This would not help the youth,” Abalos insisted. (Chito A. Chavez)
