Seaman, 5 others killed in road crash in Laguna

CALAMBA CITY, Laguna – Six residents of Tagkawayan, Quezon were killed and one was seriously injured after their pick-up truck smashed into a barricade on the national highway in Barangay Paciano here on Friday, Dec. 16.

Police identified five of the victims as Jhormel Licas, 26, seaman and driver of the vehicle with license plates VES-841; Ruel Dimailig, Jonel Hernandez, 29; Medel Hernandez, 32; and Angelo Hernandez, 24. The sixth victim was unidentified.

Investigation said the speeding vehicle suddenly occupied the opposite lane and swerved to avoid colliding with an approaching motorcycle and jeepney but flipped over and crashed into the barricade.

One passenger, Marvin Hernandez, 22, also of Tagkawayan, was injured.

Victims were taken to hospitals here and Cabuyao City, this province, where they were declared dead. Fernandez is recuperating from serious injuries in a hospital in this city.

The victims were trapped inside vehicle which was a total wreck and had to be extracted by rescuers.
