REFLECTIONS TODAY
In the Gospel of John, Jesus is the light of the world (Jn 8:12; 9:5). Jesus is the true light who was coming into the world (Jn 1:9).
In today’s Gospel, the word “light” (Greek pōti from pōs) is also attributed of John who is described as a burning and shining “lamp” (luchnos). But the light that is attributed of John the Baptist is only temporal. Jesus, as the light, is eternal. The role of John is to give witness to one true light who is Jesus Christ. As we begin the novena Masses, let us focus our attention on our Lord Jesus Christ so that the light in us, temporal it may be, may eventually bear witness to him as the true light who came into the world. Do we accept Jesus Christ to be our true light? Do we intently pray to our Lord Jesus Christ that he may dispel any darkness that is within us? As we begin the Misa de Gallo, what negative attitude do we want to give up so that we can move closer to the light of God?
Gospel • John 5:33-36
Jesus said to the Jews, “You sent emissaries to John, and he testified to the truth. I do not accept testimony from a human being, but I say this so that you may be saved. John was a burning and shining lamp, and for a while you were content to rejoice in his light. But I have testimony greater than John’s. The works that the Father gave me to accomplish, these works that I perform testify on my behalf that the Father has sent me.”
